We hear a lot these days about global warming and how our world is in peril with climatic changes that are we human’s fault and how we need to stop hurting the earth! Never fear, this is not a scientific blog about global warming. I am not a scientist but I am a Christian and I do search for answers from the Bible in order to understand the everyday life. I found something rather interesting in Genesis. Here’s the background. Adam was created by God after God created all of the earth. Adam was lonely so God created a woman to be Adam’s helper and companion. Before God created the woman God told Adam not to eat of the fruit from the tree of life (Genesis 2:15-17), it is the first command that God ever gave to a human, the only human at that time. Then God created the woman and in the course of time she was deceived by the smartest and most intelligent creature in the Garden of Eden, the Serpent (Genesis 3:1-6). When God saw what had been done God did something drastic, let’s read what God did.
The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat. All the days of your life; And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:14-19, (New American Standard Bible or NASB).
The first of God’s creation to be cursed was not Adam nor was it the woman but it was the serpent. Why? Because the serpent had misled the woman into eating of the forbidden fruit, that’s why. God told the serpent from that moment on there would be no legs for this creature to walk on and all its descendants would crawl on the ground. God also told the serpent that the woman and all her future generations would hate snakes, would have enmity with all snakes. That curse is still in place today and if you don’t think so then I suggest you ask any woman if she likes snakes! The majority will say that they are not great fans of snakes! I know that I am not!!! By the way the word enmity means that you are hostile toward someone or something, you don’t like them and I definitely have enmity against snakes of all kinds!
The second creation to be cursed was the woman because she fell for the serpent’s deception. Her curse is to not like serpents as well as her pain in childbirth being greatly increased. When I was in the midst of labor to deliver my three biological children I sure did wish that the woman would not have eaten the forbidden fruit! I think Mothers understand what I’ve just said! God also told the woman that she would desire her husband; I think this is talking about sex. From then on the husband is to rule over the wife because that is part of her curse from God. So far Adam has not been mentioned but wait for it!
The third curse is still not directed toward Adam rather God cursed the ground because of Adam’s sin of listening to his wife and eating the forbidden fruit. Why curse the ground? I mean the tree wasn’t at fault and neither was the soil in which the tree was planted so why does the ground have to suffer? I believe that it is because the ground was perfect just as the earth was perfect because sin had not entered into the world until the woman and her husband ate the forbidden fruit. Think about it! The world had been created to be a perfect world all finely tuned to work harmoniously with civilization. Sin changed everything when it entered the world and so the ground, the earth, had to change as well. God had to curse the ground as a preface to Adam’s curse.
The fourth creation to be cursed by God is finally Adam, who broke the one command that God had given him. He listened to the woman and ate the forbidden fruit. Adam’s curse is to work for everything that up until that time God had provided freely to him. Adam had to work to eat, work to be clothed, work to have shelter, work to provide for his family and any livestock he might have. He had to fight thorns and thistles and learn to farm and learn to be a shepherd and a livestock person and he had to learn to be a father as well as a husband and a boss! That was a heavy burden for Adam to carry. Why he didn’t even have a name for his wife yet! What happens next?
Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:20-24, (NASB).
Somehow I can’t help but think that all of creation cried, moaned, and grieved when God cursed the ground. I am sure that Adam and Eve must have felt sorrow and regret for the first time in their lives. Sin entered the world and for the first time there is separation between God and His creation, between God and human beings. We suffer sin as a direct consequence of Adam’s sin. Women suffer pain in childbirth as a consequence off Eve’s sin. We hate snakes and snakes hate us because of the Serpents sin. The earth produces weeds and doesn’t let us grow food without a lot of hard work because of the curse placed upon the ground. This is our life today; this is how we live our life under God’s curse.
So what was my great thought that struck me like lightning the other day? Global warming is a natural effect of God curing the ground. There is something interesting in the story of Cain and Abel and the first murder where Cain killed Abel and hid his body in the ground. That was the first grave. Look at what happened when God confronted Cain.
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground. Genesis 4:9-10, (NASB).
Wow! The blood of Abel cried out to God from the ground! Not only does the ground have to suffer in how it operates as an imperfect earth but the blood of the murdered cries out to God from the ground. Never fear, God knows where the body is hidden. God knows where the bodies of those who have been murdered throughout all these centuries have been buried. Imagine how the ground must feel! That’s why when Jesus came the earth recognized who Jesus was.
As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, shouting: “BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” But Jesus answered, “I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!” Luke 19:37-39, (NASB).
I believe that the entire earth, the big blue planet, is waiting for the day when the curse God placed upon the earth is lifted. When will that be? When the new heaven and the new earth comes down from heaven as told in Revelation.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” Revelation 21:1-4, (NASB).
Oh what a day that will be! I can hardly fathom it all and I can hardly wait to see it and to be a part of it all! Keep striving Christian through this world, keep on enduring in your pursuit of the things of God and one day soon, God willing, I will see you there!
