My son has been asking me to write list of things that I want for Christmas. He reminded me that he didn’t have much money to spend so I should make it a list of things he can afford. What a sweetheart he is to want to buy his Mama a Christmas present. I have been pondering his question and here is my Christmas Wish List.
I want families to heal. I want those who are hurting because of the loss of a loved one to feel the love of God as they grieve this Christmas. I want families who are broken apart because of out-of-control people to feel God’s love and hope for them. I want all addicts to stop being addicts, to get help for their addictions whether it be drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, porn, or being a neglectful workaholic. I want those who have been touched by divorce to be healed and find peace and release from the torture of it all. I want children to have healthy parents so that the children can grow up with healthy adult role models. Yes I want families to heal.
I want the sick to be healed. There are so many who are suffering with terrible diseases and I want them to be healed. I want a cure to be found for diabetes, multiple-sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Addison’s, fibromyalgia, cancer, kidney disease, liver disease, mental disease, HIV, and every disease known to plague the human race, I want them to be healed. I want their families and loved ones to also be healed from the trauma from living with someone who is chronically ill. It is hard on spouses, children, loved ones, and extended family members when one of those whom they love is ill so I want peace and restoration to reign over those families who are dealing with illness and be healed.
I want poverty to be healed. So many problems come about in this world because of poverty and the mentality that all you have to do to crawl out of poverty is get a job. There are a lot of problems that come from poverty situations. Those who are raised in poverty often stay as adults in poverty because they know nothing about life outside of poverty. Creating jobs is great because it is a first step out of poverty but there is so much more that needs to be healed than just the financial side of life. Yes, I want poverty to end and those who live in it to be healed.
I want war to end and people healed from the trauma of war. There are so many wars going on in this world and not all of them use guns and bullets to fight. The war between cops and people needs to be healed. The wars that rage in many countries because of twisted religions and ideologies need to be healed. The war between cultural differences needs to be healed, we all have differences and that can be a good and wonderful thing so let’s embrace our differences rather than trying to remake everyone in the world in our own image. The war between political ideals can be so dangerous when we take it to the level of disrespect and mistrust and suspicion that leads on toward violence and hatred and wars. Yes, war needs to end and trauma needs healed.
I want jerks to stop being jerks and be healed. So often we see jerks in our society, students that are jerks to other students and it often leads to bullying another student. Drivers that don’t obey the traffic laws and cut off other drivers are often jerks. Those who delight in using offensive language in public where it makes others uncomfortable are jerks. People who think they are better than others are jerks. Jerks come in all shapes, all sizes, and all races and I just want them to be healed.
I want kindness toward others to return full-blown and blooming in every darkened corner of the world. I want compassion for others to flourish like sunshine on a warm summer day. I want tolerance to be taken to the next level and bloom into respect for others and their beliefs. I want joy to replace the pursuit of happiness because happiness is so fleeting and often just a myth. I want a love that is not self-seeking or self-preserving, or self-fulfilling to replace the world’s definition of love. I want everyone on the planet to get along and to stop hating and stop twisting the truth and stop being jerks and stop, just stop!
Santa Claus is fun to believe in but he can’t bring about this kind of change in our world. Buddha is dead so he can’t bring about these changes either. Science can’t change the heart of people and right now can’t heal most of us either. Technology fuels jealousy and emptiness as we compare our lives with others and this doesn’t heal us either. Philosophy is the study of what others think but so far such thinking hasn’t gotten us to a better place. Mohammad may have gone to the mountain but the mountain hasn’t changed, as the old adage goes. Political leaders seem to bring nothing to the table but bitterness and divisiveness. So who can bring about the healing on my wish list?
In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” Luke 2:8-14, (New American Standard Bible).
Until next time…Katherine
