Today in our world there is a lot of chaos going on around us. Do you feel it? Some Muslims hate Christians, some Muslims hate other Muslims, most Muslims hate Jews, and in America Democrats hate Republicans, Conservatives are hated by Progressives, half the country hate President Trump while the other half love what he is doing, and so many people are suffering from the wrath of their enemies. As a Christian I have been deeply concerned about my brothers and sisters around the world as well as here in America. It is so easy to become distracted by the news and harder to stay focused on God. The world must be worse than ever before, right? Well, that may be debatable because the world that Jesus was born into was not a walk in the park either. There were just as many intrigues and scandals then as now and the world under the Roman Empire was longing for some relief too. Having a proper perspective on our life is very helpful in keeping our minds balanced but where do we get such perspective? From the Bible of course.
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Colossians 3:1-4, (New American Standard Bible or NASB).
So there is that little word “if” and that two-letter word alerts me that there is something conditional to notice. Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, if you have accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you have become a follower of Christ and if you are maturing your faith through Christ, then keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. There it is the perspective we need, but why think on things above where Christ is seated next to God? First of all Christ is in heaven seated on the right of God, the seat of honor and power. Christ died on earth and many witnesses saw Him die on the cross. He was killed by His enemies but that was not the end of the story because He also was resurrected and that is why He can sit in Heaven at the right hand of God. Now that is reason to give us all pause to think and to realize that our life on earth is not really all that important in the grand scheme of eternity. That helps us stay focused on the things of God and not the things of this world. That helps us keep things in perspective. Secondly there is a day coming when Christ will come back to earth again and then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Wow! Now that is also important in helping us to keep perspective especially while we live here in this human world and human body. There is a day coming when we followers of Christ will be living in glory with Jesus.
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. “In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. “And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:1-6, (NASB).
We will all have troubling time in our lives, everyone will have problems that hit them and sometimes we feel like life has knocked us down to the point that we can’t get up again. But Jesus reminds us that when these times come He is with us and we are not fighting through the situation alone. He also reminds us that God’s house is big and there is room for you and for me but we have to love Jesus and obey God. I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see my room, I mean Jesus is decorating it for me; He is preparing a room just for me! Wow! Double wow! Jesus will come back for us and we will live with Him forever in God’s house! This surely will help us to keep our perspective, keep us focused on the things of God while we live out or daily lives here on earth. There is something else too.
Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things. For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself. Philippians 3:17-21, (NASB).
As we go through our life we have patterns to follow, examples in other people’s lives for us to follow. We have so many wonderful examples to learn from in the Bible as well as people we know are solid Christians that live today whom we can pattern our lives on. But one thing we must be aware of is that there are also people who think they are saved, think they are going to be in heaven, think that they are God’s people and yet they are not going to be in heaven. These people are wrapped up far too much in the things of this world and they have lost their perspective. The truth is that we are to keep focused on our heavenly citizenship rather than our earthly citizenship. It is more important to be a citizen of heaven than an American, Canadian, British, Australian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Mexican…and on and on and on. Let that sink in. Our citizenship is not on this earth if we are followers of Christ; our allegiance is not to a country but to the family of God!
I have to be honest here. I see some people who I love as sisters and brothers in Christ that are really outspoken about their politics. Some are out marching against President Trump. Some are out marching for the rights of whatever hot topic of the day is fashionable. I read on social media things shared that make me cringe. Why? Because I think that their focus is too much in this world and not enough on their true citizenship which is in heaven. We are to be a people who build up others and not tear them down. We are to be people who share the love of Christ. Some of you will probably say that I am judging and too preachy. I might be but I try not to be judgmental or legalistic. But I also have to speak out when I see the damage words can do to others. I hope that we can be loving to each other in the family of God. There is nothing wrong in holding political viewpoints, but do we need to share everything that we see that we might think is funny knowing that others will be angry with us? We are to be peacemakers; we are to be loving to the family of God. Let’s stay focused on the things of God, the things that are above and not the things of this earth.
